In NY, Sackets Harbor, Alexandria Bay, Sylvan Beach, Cooperstown and perhaps Skaneateles, Aurora, Sodus Point, and Cazenovia. You also have Adirondack communities for all seasons like Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, Lake Placid and Old Forge.
In Mass, you've got Rockport, Gloucester, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, etc.
In CA, Monterrey and Pebble Beach would certainly count.
You've not only listed places I've spent a lot of time in the past 3 months, but you've also listed some of my favorite places in the country.
If I didn't prefer bigger cities, Monterey would be my top spot. I prefer it to Carmel (which, despite having a wonderful beach and "cutesy" downtown, I don't care for as much) and I think the scenery is near unbeatable Monterey Bay is gorgeous. The bike trail along the coast is so much fun, and there's plenty to do there. I can't express how much I love Monterey.
Martha's Vineyard is my childhood playground. I used to ride my bike from my house to the MV ferry and spend the day down there. I still take my little 17 foot whaler over there from New Bedford a few times every summer. Love Nantucket, Rockport and Gloucester too.
