You've not only listed places I've spent a lot of time in the past 3 months, but you've also listed some of my favorite places in the country.
If I didn't prefer bigger cities, Monterey would be my top spot. I prefer it to Carmel (which, despite having a wonderful beach and "cutesy" downtown, I don't care for as much) and I think the scenery is near unbeatable Monterey Bay is gorgeous. The bike trail along the coast is so much fun, and there's plenty to do there. I can't express how much I love Monterey.
I'm not the least bit surprised you've fallen in love with Monterey. That's where a well-traveled heart can truly get left behind!
I suggest Englewood Beach, FL an Stump Pass Park - this is a top location for nice Vacation not in a big town but you do have everything in a short distance.
Is there a list of small towns that are huge tourist spots in the Summer, like Seaside Heights, NJ ; Myrtle Beach, SC ; Ocean City, MD
Thanks
Basically the whole Jersey shore from Sandy Hook to Cape May
