Many times on this forum I hear from people who say that schools that are racially integrated, which usually black and white children together in the same schools, are not safe and they would never send their children there. That is why many families do not want to live in urban areas because the schools there are unsafe, and they do not want to play "urban pioneers" with their children.

Are there any schools or towns/cities which have schools in them you know of where there are black and white, or any other mix of minority ethnicities and white children that are safe and provide a quality education for ALL of its students?

I really hope that there are examples of schools in this country where there are both whites and black or other ethnic minority students that do very well and are safe, and if they can replicate it to other places it could help attract people back to urban areas.

Howard County, MD for sure. All of the schools here range from excellent to at least above average, and a few are pretty diverse.

Wilde Lake High School: 43% white, 40% black, 10% Asian, 7% Hispanic.

Hammond High School: 49% white, 36% black, 8% Asian, 6% Hispanic

Oakland Mills High School: 44% black, 39% white, 10% Hispanic, 7% Asian

Long Reach High School: 48% white, 32% black, 12% Asian, 8% Hispanic

I'd say that many major college towns tend to be good in this regard. Perhaps even parts of some cities have this, as many cities might have their share of charter schools that are diverse and perform well within them. Same with many suburbs and military towns as well.

A lot of times some things are unfounded or are the exception rather than the rule. So, it's good to do some good research.

Here are some possible examples from NY: Test Scores for Indian River Central School District | GreatSchools

Test Scores for Malverne Union Free School District | GreatSchools

Test Scores for West Hempstead Union Free School District | GreatSchools

Test Scores for Jamesville-Dewitt Central School District | GreatSchools

Test Scores for Half Hollow Hills Central School District | GreatSchools

Test Scores for Rush-Henrietta Central School District | GreatSchools

Test Scores for Brighton Central School District | GreatSchools

Test Scores for Elmsford Union Free School District | GreatSchools

Test Scores for Tuckahoe Union Free School District | GreatSchools

Test Scores for Nyack Union Free School District | GreatSchools

Test Scores for Johnson City Central School District | GreatSchools

Teaneck, Montclair, Maplewood, West Orange, South Orange (Hackensack is ok, which is where I went) These are all in NNJ

Lauryn Hill and Zach Braff went to high school together in Maplewood (they were good friends).
Teaneck was the first school district in the nation to integrate its schools.

These are all generally affluent communities though.

There are a few high schools(mostly magnets/selective enrollment) in Chicago proper that definitely fit the criteria. Not not only are safe , but are the best CPS has to offer academically. About 3 or 4 of these high schools are placed in the top 10% in the nation.

Shaker Heights High School in suburban Cleveland has a racial distribution of about 50-50 black white, and is one of the best public schools in the state. There were 40 students who were honored for national merit achievements (17 of whom were semi-finalists) in 2009. The school annually feeds dozens of students to Ivy League and other prestigious schools. The district gained notoriety for it's progressive approach diversification in the 70's.

I think Magnet schools and other test scores or GPA oriented public schools are the best method to draw and maintain diversity. The biggest one in Chicago is Lane Tech, which has an enrollment of over 4,000. What I find the most impressive is that many of kids at Chicago's top selective schools are low income, yet are doing just as good(if not better) as the students in the affluent suburbs. 63% of kids enrolled at Lane Tech are low income. 86% of low income Lane Tech juniors meets & exceeds all subjects on the PSAE in 2010, almost identical to the 87% from non low income students.
