Very small job less that $400 for the move. Two guys working around 3 hours if that. I was thinking $10 each.

We had three guys on our recent move. Tipped them $20.00 each and they seemed quite happy with that.

Same thing here. Job for less than $400. $20 per guy (2 guys + owner of moving company came that day) and they were ecstatic.

A tip or gratuity should always be a reflection of your level of appreciation for a job well done.

Most professional movers are thankful when a customer simply has cold water, hot coffee/cocoa, or sports drinks available throughout the job. They feel fortunate when invited to use the restroom or sink to clean up. One couple instructed their driver that the hose was still turned at the bottom of the porch and that the crew could use the bathroom at the gas station on the corner. Wanna guess how that move went?

I've received grateful hugs, home-baked cakes and cookies, $2.00 coins, and five hundred dollar checks. Ten to $20.00 per laborer, however, is typically what’s offered.

Some customers provide light snacks or a lunch if the packing, loading or unloading activity extends past five or six hours. Eating refreshments provided in the residence not only expedites the job but allows the homeowner to keep track of the crew's activities.

A mover should never be given any property (however small) without an accompanying release signed by the homeowner. Over the years I’ve seen numerous police complaints and claim disputes where it's alleged that items were taken from the home without the shipper's knowledge.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your move.

You're right! I had forgotten about that.

We moved during summer (Texas summer!!). DH put several bottles of water in the freezer the night before. The workers were really happy.

Bad idea, unless it's AFTER the move. You don't want some tipsy mover dropping your sofa down the front steps!

Some sandwiches, chips, and sodas for lunch and a $10 are appropriate in my opinion. If you make something that they appreciate I would say give them one if it doesn't cost you that much, they will really appreciate it.

For instance, I make my own beer in my spare time and I had to get rid of the beer before packing up my equipment. I got a small town mobilized when they heard I was giving away cases of beer for help. Packing up my 26' rental truck took under a half hour. I think I gave away close to two-hundred cases of beer.

If you are happy with the movers and want to tip them here are some rules to guide you:

1) How long were the movers performing your move - if they were only there for 2 hours then you would tip them less than if they performed a 2 day move

2) How many movers were helping you - if you don't have a lot of money but want to let the guys know you appreciated their help; then divide what you can tip by the number of movers

3) If you want to tip them by giving them money for lunch or providing their lunch that is always appreciated

4) The general rule of tipping is to take the move amount and tip 10 to 20% per mover depending on how generous you are feeling
