How can I save this tree? Is there any hope
Just a few days ago I was watching Roger Cook fix a tree on "Ask This Old House". He was chiseling out wood from the wound to make the edges smooth, in order to keep it from holding moisture. They were acting like there was a good chance the tree would survive. It's my understanding that if the bark is not pulled of all the way around the tree, then it can still live.

I concur with the others who said not to "paint" it with anything....they've found that stuff doesn't help and might even hurt.
