The garden really isn't my my forte. I live in Upstate NY and am looking for some low maintenance flowering plants or shrubs that will come back every year. In one area I would like some bush that will separate the yards and flower, in another area I would like a host of differnt flowering plants.

What can you recommend that will flower throughout the season or what mix can I use that will do the same? Let me know if you need more info.

Cheese...I use forsythia along my property line and it is like a living privacy fence. Could not get more low maint... Getting something to stay flowering all summer is the hardest thing..unless you use annuals. I have quite a few roses..(high maint.) but you could try the Knockout Roses...I've had mine for 2 years now and they require very little care and bloom till past frost. I would try some of the local nurseries as NB suggests...Not Lowes or Home Depot!!! If you are near the Garden Factory they are great and really know their 'stuff'.. Good luck...

Of course, being in Rochester, you know Lilac trees/bushes are a great divider. They're something I miss being a transplant myself in Raleigh!

The squirrels always dug up and replanted daffodils and tulips year after year. Start with one and the following year you'd have six! Also had good luck with grape hyacinths, irises, and lillies of the valley. Rose of Sharon bushes were good, too, but really attracted the bumbles.

My dad loved pansies, because they had a long blooming period, and marigolds for the same reason. He had some mum bushes too, which always did well.

BTW, I'm a former Roman....

If you like lilacs, a really nice variety is the Miss Kim lilac - shorter branches, but many more, and therefor more flowers! Not too good for cutting though because of that.
Found a good photo of the flowers at 1800flowers - see link below

Miss Kim Korean Lilac

I was able to get a mature bush via Freecycle (and with the help of my son-in-law's brawn)--lucky me

I got some Miss Kim Lilacs for one area and some Spirea Bridal Wreath for to separate the yards. Thanks for the suggestions! We are going to get a couple more plants, but these should be a nice start.

Cheese these are the plants I have and love in ROCHESTER: (suggestion is to go to the Farmers Market too- they start out small but grow!!!-inexpensive)... Garden Factory is great...

Sprirea
Azalea
Bluebeards
Honeysuckle
Forsythia
Violiets
Rose of Sharon- MY FAVORITE
Day Lillies
Hostas
Iris- all different kinds
Roses
phlox
flax
black eyed susans
daisies
cosmos
hostas
There are a bunch more....

Cheese, pretty much the nurseries in Rochester only sell Perennials/shrubs that will grow for our area... you will be safe Have fun...

Next year- if you remember- MAY is Flower time at the Farmers Market downtown- on Sundays. Instead of the usual produce it is FULL of flowers and shrubs/trees... all of May and the 1st week of June... I get most of my stuff there- prices are great as is the selection. They always have them through the summer on Saturday spread through the market if you want to check it out- not as much of a selection but might be worth a shot.... they are not there regularly- but it might save you some money if you catch them.

I forgot to mention the FLOWERS/Plants I mentioned can be split and planted in again- they are great if you want to create more gardens....
