Flying bugs (flowers, trees, insects, yard)

Is there anyway that you can control the flying insects in your yard to at least make being outside more injoyable. In the area we live there aren't flowers or trees. I hate insects flying around your head. The stores have lots of things for crawling insects but I didn't see anything for flying. I know that you can't really do away with them all together but there must be some ideas
