When looking at electric lawn tractors many of them state: "Up to 2 hours of runtime: up to 2 acres per charge". It is the "Up to" part that bothers me. I would think that, since most batteries are the best when brand new, you would not want to buy one if you had two acres to mow that took you two hours to mow. You would be better off if you started off with this 2&2 machine to cut one acre of grass instead of the two. I would think the same would hold true for the push mowers where the consumer does not want to buy one that pushes the limits of their batteries.

For the time being I am still happy with my gas tractors for five acres.

The other day I was out vacuuming up the leaves to prep the lawn for the last mow of the season and I realized that out of all the homes around us, ours is the ONLY one where the wife (me) participates in lawn care. NONE of the wives that live around us do yardwork. ZERO. I've only ever seen the men out there edging the lawn or mowing the grass.

As I stood there covered in leaf debris struggling to shake out the mulched leaves into a bag to take to the dump, I got kind of irritated. One friend of mine in another part of the n'hood does it but it is because she loves working the garden and considers yard care an extension of that. That's not me. I hate the outdoors and can't stand gardening.

What am I doing wrong that half the time I do the yard work?? *lol*

ETA: We have a Greenworks battery-powered mower to use on our 1/4 acre lot and we can usually cut both front and back 2-3 times before we have to recharge the batteries. In summer that's a pain when we have to mow every 4-5 days. But in spring and fall, it means charging twice a month tops. It's a good mower and VERY quiet, which means we can get out there pretty early in the morning and get it done before it gets hot without waking the neighbors.

Had a terrible dream last night - make sure you're sitting down before you read this. I had a dream that someone stole my lawn mower - yep - a real nightmare. I tried to go after it but my legs wouldn't move and off the mower went. I woke up and my heart was just pounding - had to look in the garage to make sure it was still there. Little greenie was right where I left it - all wrapped up because it gets cold at night.

I wonder if all this covid/election stuff is getting to me.

i did take a peek at electric lawn tractors since i now have a tesla and i thought it would be cool to also have the electric tractor. for one thing, the prices appear much higher. next, its not clear to me what kind of power to expect from the electric ones. i would need to see a comparison to my lawn tractor. i will tow a leaf sweeper and a aerator at times and i cant really have less power than i presently have.

so i think for your 5 acres you are better off with gas especially if you are towing anything.

i actually was riding around for 2 hours last weekend so a 2 hour limit wouldnt be ideal. i do have a 220 volt outlet by the garage so i could probably charge it quickly as long as i can use that for charging.

Personally just use whichever kind mower works for you. I have never used a battery mower, too new and never had pleasant experience with rechargeable battery tools. And seems bit pricey for good ones with some power and battery charge lasting, though you can of course buy spare batteries which is more expense. Have used corded electric mowers. But out here in the back of beyond, gas still makes most sense. This isnt some putting green type ultra smooth suburban lawn. So even many of gas mowers really arent designed for it, most dont set up high enough for uneven terrain. And though that corded one long ago did fine, it was as strong as any push gas mower, but I would have to use a generator cause frankly areas to mow too far from electric service. A generator kinda negates any advantage of electric. Regular maintenance is the key to keeping gas mower easy to use. That plus keep it as simple mechanically as possible. Mowers you just push without self propel are going to be less hassle to keep going long term than ones with lot extra drivetrain parts.

I just looked at the Home Depot 42" Zero Turn RYOBI riding mower. They claim that it will mow up to 3 acres. I am still bothered by the "up to". It charges on 120 V. But I would never get one after my last experience with the John Deere Zero Turn. The other electric riders they sell all look like the rear engine gas mower counterparts.

Many of us like the standard looking lawn tractors because you can tow with them. These other style tractors don't really fit the bill.

As I mentioned, i own an over five year old battery powered push mower. I generally think these things are for the neighborhood yard, I could not imagine cutting a sizable area with a battery mower, but never tried it either. But in that case, if I had so much to mow, there might be other things involved also that would require a gas mower. But at that, I cannot imagine actually mowing such a large area in a manner like someone does their neighborhood yard. Usually let it grow up then take a brush hog to it.

I mow about 5000spft, three time before I charge, but it does not even need charge probably, that is just when i do it, never seen how much it can really mow, I also am on the original battery.

Folks with crackpot theories about how air quality does not matter can take that noise and stuff it you know where. The air quality here in Phoenix is not good, and is one of a few reasons I will not retire here. One of my uncles used to snowbird in Mesa. He had lung issues, and eventually it got to the point where he could not live in Mesa any longer. The last year of his life they stayed in Minnesota during the winter. He and his wife were considering buying a place in a more remote Arizona location, but he didn't live long enough to make that happen.
Nothing would be worse than dragging a stupid cord around a mower and running it over rover a million time. I remember them crap mowers back in the 70's.

corded yard machines have the benefit of having good power and also being cheap. i got a worx corded chainsaw and the thing has enough power to take down pretty much id be taking down myself and only cost about $100. my brother borrowed it and kept it for a while, i just bought myself another one and told him to keep it.

now when we go to his house he sends me behind his yard to use it to cut firewood for the fire pit (which is really not the best wood).
