I am thinking about starting an indoor herb garden.....but I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. I'll start small, only a 3-4 types of herbs and see how it goes. Historically, I don't have much of a green thumb, so I'm nervous that it won't work out for me, but I want to give it a shot. Does anyone have any experience with these? Which herbs should I start out with?

I know they sell small kits of 3-4 herbs that you can start indoors. Generally they are parsley, with rosemary, thyme and mint, or a variation on these four.

You can grow herbs from seeds in pots that have a good drainage system, water often, keep in a lighted area, but not strong hot sun, and then if successful move to larger pots as the roots expand.

If you have sufficient light, keep them well watered, continue to transplant them, you may have moderate to high success with almost any herb.

I have always had good luck with chives inside. You can grow them in a smallish pot in a kitchen window.

Actually, IMHO mint should *only* be grown in a pot because it can be very invasive.
In Colorado, I always had good luck growing rosemary indoors in a pot.
I agree that herbs need good drainage. They don't like wet feet.

I posted about this elsewhere in this forum.
An online friend of mine purchased an aerogarden.
I have to admit, I was skeptical, but she has had great success with it. She has posted some very nice photos. The only thing is that sometimes the plants get too big for their container!
Then you have to upgrade to the larger, deluxe version.

Default I have this indoor herb garden and it rocks

As a beginner, it is very difficult to grow herbs indoor. I've tried for over a year and getting the right conditions such as proper sunlight, having the right level of nutrients, water and humidity is quick a challenge and most of the time, my herbs, vegetables or fruits die before I'm able to harvest them.

A friend of mine recommended me an indoor garden product a year ago and since then, I've been able to enjoy fresh indoor grown herbs year round. If you are struggling, give this a try.

Thank you! I was surprised to see more input on this thread, since it had been so long since I posted it. I'm still interested in planting an indoor herb garden, but I am on the verge of moving cross-country, so it will have to wait for awhile. Thanks for the tip, though!

Does it require you to buy seeds from the company all the time or can you use any herbs seeds on the market? Also, how long did the plants stay alive for the harvesting? I saw that they guarantee 28 days in someone's page but I was hoping it would be longer. Thanks for your help!

I don't know, it's an online friend, but I could ask her.
She's had it a long time, I have a feeling she uses just any old seeds, but I do know that she upgraded to the larger system.
