A few weeks ago I was clearing out maple and Mimosa saplings from our arborvitae. In the underneath inside them I saw what I called "The Smurf Village", about a half dozen big white tomato sized puffball mushrooms. A few days ago I saw two had grown in the grass a few feet outside the hedge. So today the grass was finally dry enough to mow and it was very long. I ran over one of the mushrooms with the mower. It had turned brown gray and I had forgotten about them. Up came a huge spore cloud and I inhaled some of the spores before I could back up.
So now I'm thinking massive fungal infection in the lungs and nasal membranes. I read that the mushrooms arent toxic. I am a little worried about an allergic reaction, though. They're also edible if you get them when they're white and not ready to produce spores.
Mushrooms are everywhere from this wet weather. Be careful, you could be next.

no doubt. they're practically exploding out of the ground lately from all the rain here on the east coast.

you'll probably be fine after inhaling those spores if your immune system is functioning properly.

Default All you want to know about mushroom poisoning

Medscape: Medscape Access

"Bronchoalveolar allergic syndrome may follow the inhalation of spores of puffball mushroom species. This syndrome begins with a nasopharyngitis, which is followed by worsening respiratory symptoms, including dyspnea, cough, fever, and malaise, which may progress to respiratory failure."

If you get sick, let the doc know about the mushroom incident. S/he will never include it as a possible cause of symptoms if you do not do so. Talk about the hoof beats on the bridge belonging to zebras, not horses!
