I've had great success with my pumpkins. I have 8 very cute small pumpkins ranging from quite green to quite orange...but the frost killed the vines. (Central NY)

Do I leave them on the vines a little longer?

Or go ahead and break them off and arrange them on the porch?

Or does it matter?

We usually spray them with clear poly to keep the critters away.

If the frost killed the vines and the leaves have dropped to the ground, its time to pick them. I take a knife out to the garden to cut them. You need to leave some of the vine attached to the pumpkin, don't cut it all the way off. By cutting the end of the vine all the way off your pumpkin, it won't keep as long.

Great suggestion; do you know if they turn more orange when it turns cold? My Italian style are green variegated and are supposed to have orange ribs. Not so far, though. It's just getting down to 5 or 6 C. at night here.

Its hard to say. Each variety is so different. Most of my pumpkins just started turning orange, so the cold probably does have something to do with it. We are having an unusual Indian summer, and most of my pumpkins are turning a very nice deep shade of orange. But I still have some field pumpkins that are mostly green. Hopefully they will turn soon, we need them for Halloween, lol.
