This morning I went out to water my plants and found a cluster of strange bugs on the stem of one of my tomato plants. I freaked out and sprayed them but I was wondering if anyone knew what they were. I don't have a picture but I can explain what they looked like. They were quite large, like large ants, and their bodies were very vividly red. Long black legs and long black antenna. The bodies kind curved upward at the back. Two tiny little black eyes at the head. I think I killed some of them when I sprayed. When I looked them up online, the closest thing that looked like them was a wheel bug but wheel bug nymphs are black at the front and then become red at the bad. These guys were red all over with the black legs and antennas. What are they?
A strong spray of water from the hose is best to get rid of aphids....they're very soft-bodied. If any make it back up (most won't), spray 'em again. This keeps the use of pesticides to a minimum.
