Im on a sprint family plan(2 lines), and i pay about $100 a month.
im looking to cut that expense down lower. i dont talk on the phone much and neither does my mom and her bf(i pay for the plan).
i send/receive a fair amount of text messages(1100 per month avg).
i was wondering what individual plans would be the cheapest and the best value? such as straight talk, boost, etc....im even considering the prepaid plans. it would be great if i can find a pre-paid plan that somehow offers free nights and weekends.
what are your experiences with them? what would you recommend? reception/service wise?
I just switched today to pre-paid AT&T (GoPhone). $2.00 a day, unlimited talk, text, and I forget what else. And you only get charged on the days you actually use it, and that's for the whole day. So I can make as many calls and send/receive texts as much as I want in one day, and pay only $2.00 I haven't used mine in over a week. I WAS paying .25 a minute for talk, .20 per text.
Get as many people on your family plan as possible, and split the cost evenly. Get friends/relatives/anyone on the plan. I have 4 other people on my 'family plan' even though I am not married/don't have a family. The cost is $28/mo /person. Also, ask if you get a 'corporate discount'. If you work for a bigger company and mention it and simply ask for a discount, verizon will most likely give you one. I asked and they knocked 20% off the total monthly bill on the spot.
This isn't exactly what you asked, but it you have a land line, drop it immediately. If you have a cell phone, a land line is a complete waste of money.
Consumer Cellular, if they are available in your area, are good *but* you need to figure out in advance what you are going to use, no roll-over, and cell to cell phone calls to SO are billed at 2 minutes of air time per minute of talk. But no contract, they have various plans for air time and text volumes.
A little bit off topic....re: texting on the cheap
The OP is getting good advice. For those who are looking for cheap ways to text:
Tracfone (the prepaid service) users receive texts gratis. Great if have friends/kids who love to text and you just want to stay updated.
Yahoo mail has a feature where you can send and receive texts for "free" (figure the cost of your internet service...) under their messenger device. Your contacts have to "agree" so accept texts from Yahoo which will "cost" them one extra text. Works well if you are stuck in front of a computer all day.
You can always email texts if you have a computer, phonenumber@vtext.com for verizon, among others. When they reply it comes right back to your email.
Also you can use Google's Voice/Grand Central web interface, they give you a (free) phone number and you can use that to send texts as well. You can also have it forward to your cell phone. It's pretty neat. I use the Google Voice app for Android to send/receive free texts so I don't have to pay Verizon.
If you use your phone for just one text a day, that's $60.00/month!
Well, yeah. If that's how you use your phone, then it isn't all that economical. I use my phone maybe once a week, but under this plan, I now can reply to texts, check voice mail, AND make a call for one price. Works out to $8 - $10 a month for me.
