Ok so my husband has been based out of the Auburn area since July of 2011.We live 2-3 hours away in Saginaw,Mi.I need some advice on areas to rent. Also possible sites with rental info (already been on craigslist)

We have 3 kids,1 in high school,1 in middle school,1 in elementary. So schools are the most important thing. We are in our early 30's but we (including kids) are mostly home bodies. We enjoy rural and city living, either will work. I was looking at Fort Wayne because they seem to have a lot of rentals.I just dont know the areas..

I will say my idea of a bad neighborhood might be different than others.Just google Saginaw,mi crime rate and you will see.(For a while we were #1 violent city per capita)..I grew up here so I am very used to things like crime and run down neighborhoods.Sad but true. And the schools are horrid. My kids go to school out of district, but the filth is spreading there too...Not to mention just to rent here its like 600+ just for the ghetto neighborhoods.

We can adapt anywhere I just want good schools...

As I have visited Saginaw, Fort Wayne is somewhat different, as to what you have said. Fort Wayne has been consistently named annually as one of the best cities to raise a family. After living here for a few years, I can certainly understand why. Fort Wayne, which is probably about 4-5x larger than Saginaw, has it's fair share of crime. However, this crime seems to be largely concentrated in one area and is usually gang-affiliated. The southeast side of the city is one to stay away from, however, since your husband will be commuting to Auburn, you would most likely want to stay near the northern side of Fort Wayne, which is a great place to live with plenty of shopping, great schools, and great access to I-69. It is really hard to find a 'bad' place to live in northern Fort Wayne, as it is virtually without crime (besides car break ins and robberies) but nothing violent. If you stay north of I-69. Look into the Huntertown area, as this has been the hotspot for northeast Indiana. The population has skyrocketed in the last couple of years. It is mainly a bedroom community that is extremely suburban. Great access to SR 3 as well as it runs right through the heart of the area. Huntertown and many of the northern suburbs are part of the Northwest Allen County School system, which is great and feeds into Carroll High School. Yes, it is a large high school, with a freshman campus; however, academics and athletics are top-notch. You won't be disappointed. The great thing about this area also is that rent is particularly lower so you shouldn't be hard fought to find a home to rent in your price range. Good luck, and hope this helps!

Looking in Allen County, I would also think the Huntertown or Leo area would be a good area to locate, for their proximities to Auburn. I wouldn't say those areas are immune to violent crime. Typically if it occurs in those areas its not a random act. Both areas have good schools. Fort Wayne Community Schools seems to have a few more challenges than the suburban schools. Part of that comes from FWCS being a few hundred students away from being the largest school district in the state. In any of the districts you will most likely find the same issues, I'd say they are just kept a little quieter in the suburban schools. I know intelligent recent graduates from all the local school districts. So I wouldn't say that a quality education would be unattainable by going to one school district over another.

Depending on budget finding a rental could be challenging. I am not sure that there are any apartment communities in the NWACS district. I am thinking that the dividing line is Dupont until you get west toward Bethel. There are a few apartment communities just south of Dupont which would place them in FWCS. Dupont is also the boundary line for EACS until you get further east. I am not sure where the Leo schools area starts and stops within the EACS district. Either way I think you are looking at searching through single family homes for those two areas.

I am not aware of a good database to begin a search for rentals. I've seen some local real estate agents posting on here, they maybe able to point you in the right direction.
