Another thing I do is carry a disposible camera (or a cell phone camera will work) in my beach bag. Live shelling is against the law (not to mention not cool) but I find some really neat inhabited shells from time to time. I take a photo of them before putting them back in the water; this way I have the memory of the shell w/o harming the animal.

You're right,Sheshells....it's a bummer to find a big starfish or a nice shell with an occupant.While they were replacing the sand at Ft Myers Beach,live conch shells were washing up by the thousands.

Thanks for the info...
I agree I'm too much of an animal lover. I would never take any living creatures from the sea. I'm just interested in seashells. Esoecially the augers & sand dollars. While living in San Diego, Hubby & i collected many sand dolaars. We actually found one alive. It was very interesting, cause it doesn't look alive, other than the dark color & little tiny feelers if that's what one would call them, all over the bottom of the dollar. We let it be.
