We are relocating to Ft. Lauderdale soon. Have lived in Chicago and it's burbs all our life. Have two girls in college but unfortunately have to move our sophmore daughter to another school, any suggestions of areas with good high schools? Sounds bad but not really interested in grade schools.

Coral Springs, Parkland, Davie, Cooper City and Weston will be the only cities you find A rated public Highschools in all of broward county. Also, keep in mind that Broward (I believe), has some of the best schools in all of Florida. You will not find an A rated public high school in Ft. Lauderdale. However, they do have great Private schools, just a bit expensive.

Public or private?

If you are looking for private, I had my child in Nova University school but I would have switched her to St. Thomas Aquinas for high school (fewer social issues). They are both very good school. I know Pine Crest is as well, and its academic level requires a very motivated student, as there is no life beyond homework there. Friends of mine sent their children to American Heritage and were happy. I can not help with public schools.

I know someone who went to high school at Coral Springs High and seemed to have a really great experience.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Parkland is one of USN&W Report's top 100.

I have heard that Pompano is really good. Is it strictly a magnet or can you attend if you live within the district lines?

Chelsa, some of the less than "A" schools have magnet programs. I'm not familiar with wha Pompano's offers, but as an example, Atlantic Community in West Boca, has a highly regarded IB (international baccalaureate) program.

Gotcha - see that is why I love you - truth is, I haven't even looked at the lesser schools - I figure since everyone says the school system is so bad, that I should stay away from anything that is not "A" rated

Thanks Chelsa! the magnets are great too because not only do they play to kids' strengths and interests, but they give parents flexibilty on where to live. Some of the magnets however are less safe than others, so you really have to do your homework on them.
