Our plan is to sell our home in Charlotte NC first. Actually close on the house, then move to Fort Collins. (We absolutely can't afford to move in to a more expensive market and have any risk of carrying 2 mortgages). While I will try to find a house while we are on the market (and make our offer contingent on our home selling), there is a good chance our house will sell quickly and what I am looking for in FC isn't available yet. Meaning, I could be in a situation where I have a moving truck full of furniture and boxes, with the need of some short-term housing.

I don't think apartments do any month by month leasing, typically you have to sign at least a 6 month lease.

I have a wife and 2 year old child. I was thinking they could stay in NC with her mother, while I head to Fort Collins to find our new home. That scenario is rough because I'd be pressured to buy the first house that meets our needs and get us back together.

Has anyone done anything like this before? Sell your house first, then move cross country? Looking for advice and possibly options I haven't considered.

Thanks in advance--
TomC

Tom, one of the things we old-timers on this site always advise is to strongly consider renting a house for a year. There is SOOOOO much to choose from out here that you need 6-12 months to see it all and really make good choices.

If you have a job in the fort, move there, else keep your options open relative to job location, it's a huge metro area of nearly 3M people and the choices are mind boggling; don't rush it.

We're already sold on the neighborhood Ridgewood Hills SW of Tribly and College. It's just a matter of the right house coming up for sale at the right time and price. My wife and I are both in to remote IT management, so where we live doesn't matter for our fields.

Thanks for the tip, I was considering looking in to 6 month rentals, but timing would possibly put us in to buying a house in the winter. Also, we both need home offices and a 2-3 bedroom apartment would be tough for our jobs.

Hi Tom,
If you are set on temporary housing in our area, you might try Carousel Properties.

Good luck and have a great day.

Carousel Properties is definately a good place to stay short term while you are house hunting. It is a little expensive, but they are all furnished and it is a month to month rental agreement.

Trilby and College or Trilby and Taft Hill, etc. It's a great area! I would love to live there.
