Hi, welcome to Colorado!

Fort Collins might be a good place to open up a Thai Restaurant. There are several already, as you guessed, but there might be room for more. Fort Collins people do like to eat out and the educated population likely enjoys Asian food. Of course, in this recession starting up a new business of any kind will be challenging.

I currently live in Denver (formerly of Fort Collins), and while there are some good Thai restaurants in Denver (my favorite is US Thai in Edgewater), I will say that the selection of good Thai restaurants is surprisingly small, compared say to Vietnamese restaurants (of which there are hundreds), plus some of the Thai restaurants are not very authentic (mixed with Chinese-style). So, my opinion is that the opportunities may be more in Denver.

Well, in Fort Collins you have: Thai Pepper, Toy's Thai, Bann Thai, and Sri Thai -- I don't know of the other one. The former three are around CSU, I would say that they have that area pretty well covered. Sri Thai is on the west side of town. Looks like there's nothing on the SE side of Fort Collins, so that might be a possibility. SE side of Fort Collins is more families, lots of technology people, so that might be an opportunity. It is true that families with kids tend to be less interested in ethnic foods, however. You'd definitely want to try to capture the lunch crowd from HP/Intel if you are on the SE side.

Denver has more places than Fort Collins, as you might guess, but as I said there are only probably about 3 or 4 places really worth going to. Most of those are in the city of Denver as opposed to the suburbs. Denver can definitely support more good thai places -- if there really are 10 in Boulder, Denver Metro area is 10 times the size of boulder, so we should be able to support more than we have currently. As I said, my favorite is US Thai in Edgewater -- there are a few others I've heard good things about.

I live in Loveland and I do think there is room for a really good Thai restaurant. I wonder if it might go over well in downtown Loveland. In my opinion we only have 1 really good asian restaurant here in Loveland and that is the Asian Cafe on the south side of town. I don't know where in Fort Collins you live, but it might be less expensive to get started in downtown Loveland and you wouldn't have much competition.

That's actually a pretty good idea. Loveland is probably underserved, and you might be able to catch some people from the far south of Fort Collins too.

Southeast Fort Collins seems to be growing fast, especially along Harmony road. So I'd suggest that area. Or, perhaps 34, east of Loveland but before I-25. Not only would you capture locals at both of those places, but you'd snag some passers-by as well. I would definitely stop.

Especially if you offered up TASTY, AFFORDABLE, and HEALTHY Thai food. Most Asian restaurants offer one or two of those things. But if you could offer all three, you'd definitely have a niche in the market.
