That would probably be the retired Californians.

Wages are low in Fort Collins.
I never found the wages to be low - median family income was over $70,000 in Larimer County. I think there are few places with the quality of life Fort Collins has, where you can buy a nice house in the 200's. You might earn a bit more in Boulder, sure, but the cost of living is higher in all of Boulder County save Longmont and maybe Lafayette. You may be able to buy the same house in the northern suburbs of Denver, but to me the quality of life is not the same.

I think its more a question of finding a job. I don't think a city like Fort Collins can ever compare to a larger metro job market like Denver-Boulder.

As for Forbes rankings, whatever, Ft Collins is a nice place to live but it will have shortcomings and these lists are pretty silly.

A commute from Fort Collins to Denver would take an hour and fifteen minutes, even going the allowed 75 mph on the highway. Such a waste of time and gasoline and energy, though! And that is in good weather, not snow or hail. Live closer to your work.

It does seem hard to find a job here in Fort Collins. Yes, high tech might be well paid, but HP has had many lay-offs in the last 4 years. There are many college kids here - that might depress the job market, not sure. The pay does seem lower.

Boulder seems to have more jobs than Fort Collins, which surprises me. Especially in graphics and website design. Google is a major employer there. There are a few product design companies, too.

Fort Collins has HP, Intel, Waterpick, Wolf Robotics, and many other tech companies. There is also the Forest Service and another air quality gov't agency here.
