I've found many people aren't aware they can hit the AC button and shut off the compressor. I'm pretty sure my wife is one of them.
Just hit auto and pick the temp. A lot of AC compressors are variable displacement these days, so you don't feel the compressor cycling, and certainly can't tell a HP difference between on and off.
With my newer vehicles I couldn't tell you if the AC was on or off without looking down at my controls. I don't feel any power loss. With some of my older 80's and 90's Mustangs, the compressors cycle and you can certainly feel it when it kicks on.
