They've definitely done different. I'm not that old, so the classic Mustangs were never new cars to me. But since then they've gone from making a cheaper car with an underpowered engine to putting decent engines in cheap cars to making not so cheap cars that were good. The Mustang now competes directly on price with a BMW M2. Definitely different from the 120 hp V8 Mustangs they used to make in basically every way. Unfortunately one of those ways is cost which is understandable. The new ones are actually good.

There's also the soccer mom/dad crossover EV with the Mustang moniker. Not a bad vehicle, but it's odd to me they slapped a Mustang name on it considering it can't do a quarter mile without overheating and going into limp mode. Definitely fast enough for stoplight races when taking Timmy to tee ball though, so maybe that's why.

The GT350 and GT500 were two very good differents. Ricing out a Mustang and charging 300k for it is a bad kind of different.

Like the Camaro and Corvette, the styling is just ugly. I would take the GT500 for 1/3 the price if I wanted a powerful and attractive track and street car, or even a Mach I Mustang with 470 hp for about $70k. My F150 has the 5.0 Coyote with 385 hp and I can imagine that with 470 on a lighter car it would be a lot of fun. No one really needs 800 hp.

The Mustang Shelby GT 500 can generate up to 550lb of downforce with the optional track package. The Mustang GTD can generate up to 1,000lb of downforce with its aero package. No test results have been made available, but I don't think the GT 500 will be close to the GTD in performance. The engine horsepower is actually pretty close, but I don't think the rest of the car is.
