The Probe was not going to replace the Mustang. It was going to be "Mustang". It was much like the Mustang II debacle.
The car itself was replacing the RWD Mustang at the time, and to be called Mustang. There was not going to be any RWD, V8 Mustang anymore at that point. It only got called Probe when it ended up as a separate model (the name itself taken from the series if aerodynamic concept cars that carried that name). The write in campaign wasn't to keep it from being called Mustang, it was to keep it from replacing the existing Mustang, which is what Ford had planned to do.
And the Mustang II wasn't a debacle; it handily outsold all other Mustangs save for the '65 model year. Ford started its development in 1970 when the BOSS 429 was being sold and the '71-73 Mustang had already been finalized. Lee Iacocca had realized at that point that the Mustang was growing way too large. And the big block cars were getting hit with outrageous insurance rates. So a return the Mustang's roots was in order. The Falcon (which had been a compact car when the original Mustang was based off of it) had grown to become the base intermediate sized Torino, so the compact Pinto was chosen as the basis for the new small car.
It's not a Mustang, a 4-door electric crossover/SUV is just that, it should NOT have the Mustang name anywhere on it.
I was wondering what the folks at Ford were thinking, or not thinking! Better yet, what were they smoking? This is stupid and I don't think anyone has to launch any petitions to change the name on this... thing, when consumers refuse to buy it, Ford will rethink this and call it something else.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Or rather lots and lots of RMB
They'll sell hundreds of thousands in China off the mustang name and laugh all the way to the bank

You keep hoping for that.
First Edition is confirmed sold out but each trim level gets its own set of reservation numbers.
Judging by the numbers reservation holders are posting on the Mach-E forum, the whole first year run may be sold out.
As for the naming "problem", it may be taking care of itself.
People on that forum have little interest in calling their future cars "Mustang", they call it "Mach-E".
In the end, Ford is going to discover that the cars stand (and sell) on their own merits.
The Mustang name may indeed fall away from future Ford CUV EVs, but it won't be because ICE Mustang owners cried about it.
It'll be because Mach-E buyers couldn't care less about Mustangs.
Mustang fans won’t buy just because there’s a horse on it.
EV fans would buy regardless of there’s a horse on it.
Thus there’s absolutely no reason to call it a Mustang. Ford is retarded.
If it were just an Escape EV, it wouldn't have garnered this much attention. Compare having the first year sold out to the fate of the Etron and iPace. Or the EV version of the Focus. The performance tie-in to the Mustang is unmistakable and is arguably what's driving the sales.
