Sliced pickles have a batter.

I've never tried spears. Frankly wonder if spears were fried because someone didn't realize traditionally it is teh slices that are fried. Just thinking.

There was a "Louisiana Kitchen" (aka Popeyes Chicken) who sold fried pickles a few years back. They were soooooo tasty...then they just stopped selling them all of a sudden.

Now I'm getting hungry. I haven't tried fried spears of either pickles or cukes. I will try it.
Since the post I fried up a mess of cukes. I like to use just flour, salt, cayenne with just enough milk to make it like a pancake batter consistancy. Or I get the Tempura batter from the grocery store.
Aw heck, now I gotta go and get the fixens for Fried Green Tomatos now.
