What is Russian Salad? Is it salad with Russian dressing? Or something else?

I've had Russian salads in Eastern Europe. They were mayonnaise or sour cream based. With everything from beets to cheese, cabbage and peas.

^^^^ This.

It's a potato salad that has carrots, peas, beets, hard-boiled eggs, chopped onion, chopped scallion, mayo, salt, and white pepper.

I make it the way above, as that's what my family prefers.

However, there are a few variations on it, and every variation I've ever had has always been good. Some people add chopped Spam, ham or salami. Others omit the mayo and instead add olive oil and a few dashes of vinegar.

I've never heard of cheese or cabbage as part of this salad. But it sounds like a sharp cheese would work well in it.

Yesterday I ordered from Halal Guys - a large gyro platter and a large falafel. I liked the falafel more. We had that for lunch and dinner both.

Tonight I'm making hamburgers, corn on the cob, and a sugar snap salad with a simple vinaigrette of rice wine vinegar, sugar, toasted sesame oil, and some ginger.

Me and my family LOVE this potato/beet salad. I make a Dominican version, Ensalada Rusa. It has onion infused vinegar. I haven't made it in awhile. Thanks for reminding me!

Last night's dinner of pasta in a heavy cream, tomato and sausage sauce. Comfort food at its finest!

Tonight I am making a pot of homemade sloppy Joes. I like to put cheese on mine, the rest of the family thinks I'm crazy!
