The cornbread thread made me think of this. I'm dieting again, so I'm enjoying thinking about food. We ate a lot of really cheap food in college that I don't really eat much anymore. Suddenly I am nostalgic. Besides the jiffy cornbread, some other food I made (no dining hall for me!) were:

1. Ramen - not the good imported ramen, either. These used to be something like a dollar for 4 packs.
2. "Salad" from Hardees (I think) fixins bar - They had free lettuce and tomatoes and stuff...those fools.
3. Pizza Bagels - I haven't had one in years!
4. Chick peas - Cans were cheap. I made a lot of homemade hummus and chickpea and potato curries.

college food isnt "cheap" by any means, its just convenient, i spent around 120 bucks every 2 weeks while living in a dorm, no stove, small frig, and microwave.

you can still eat good while in college, granted you have to the tools to do so.

learn to cook meals instead of getting instant crap.

buy in bulk, buy the cheaper generic items for everything and youll be just fine, use coupons, shop at multiple stores to get deals on different items.

In college, I lived mostly on microwave popcorn, ramen noodle cups, and Pop-Tarts.

I had a close friend in college who was from Jamaica. The things she could do on a budget with a hot plate! Oh, I used to love her curry chicken with rice! Hot plates were "illegal" in dorms, but even our RA would show up for a plate. Best meals ever.

That is what short skirts and go go boots are for...who paid for food in college? I was either on a diet, drinking diet coke and eating popcorn, or going to some guy's house, cooking his food, and eating with him. Or letting him take me out.

My last month in college consisted of brown rice (plain), pancakes (no butter or syrup), sourdough bread with a BIG JUG of white wine.

lots of Spaghetti / pasta with sauce / Parmesan cheese will go a long ways

just boil the noodles and heat up the sauce and add whatever else you like

meatballs, onions, sausage, etc

If you are a poor college student, there are several ways to eat well for less.

1) Work for campus dining - either in the cafeteria or working catering functions - they always feed you!
2) Campus ministries and local churches usually offer frequent free meals for students.
3) Cook filling meals that you can feast off of all week: Chili, soup, stews. They all take 20-30 minutes to prepare and you can always study while they are cooking.
4) If you parents are farmer, do a lot of canning in the summer months to cover the time you are in school.
