1. Ramen - not the good imported ramen, either. These used to be something like a dollar for 4 packs.
2. "Salad" from Hardees (I think) fixins bar - They had free lettuce and tomatoes and stuff...those fools.
3. Pizza Bagels - I haven't had one in years!
4. Chick peas - Cans were cheap. I made a lot of homemade hummus and chickpea and potato curries.
Stop dieting. Make a permanent change in your eating habits.
I know that isn't the topic ...but no one ever gets healthier by "dieting" as a temporary change.

For my son - ramen would top the list. He eats so much and so healthy, it's hard to name anything that is cheap!!

My college meal plan even included an actual meal plan even on weekends but we often got together after hours. One big thing was casino night on campus. The prizes were usually food and even alcoholic beverages along with some types of big electronic prizes. Others were credit at local stores. A group of us banded together and would win a crap load of prizes when we combined our winnings for bidding.

We always had pizza and beer and even local restaurant credits that we would split. Smile.

During my four years of college I survived on ramen noodles, macaroni and cheese, Patio frozen Mexican dinners, and canned corned beef hash. Haven't touched any of those in past twenty years.

We were in college so long ago and I lived first in a dorm and then the sorority house, so we ate what they served, but our daughter, the older one, lived on kraft mac and cheese: when the beginning of the month came and she got her check from us, she would add a can of tuna. 30 years later she still remembers those days. I am not sure what our younger daughter, who lived in an apartment ate. I do know she went to her sorority house for dinner a couple times a week. Other than that, I might not want to know what she lived on.

I lived of the stuff for months and beer of course.
That is why I really don't think I want to know what our younger daughter lived on: I am guessing beer was her number one source of nutrients. The older one did enjoy cooking and even when she lived in the sorority house I don't think they had a real cook, not like the huge houses. She went to CSUN and it was pretty much a commuters school, so the houses only slept about 10 kids at the most.
