should add, A lot of the people who buy generators don't realize how much gas they use. A 5500 watt generator will use around 1/2 a gallon an hour with a little load on it. At today's price of gas that can really get expensive. Not to mention having to keep a lot of gas around at least a couple five gallon cans to be sure you don't run out.

The most you can get out of a gasoline generator, 4000 Watt is 1/3 gallon per hour. After Wilma that would be at least 5 gallons/day. 15.00 in gas per day, without air conditioning! Meanwhile at my home there was electicity, unlimited hot water, and some experimental refrigeration. All with 100 pounds or so of wood a day! 24 hour run time as well. Portable generators CANNOT be run for extended periods of time and must be rested. Think natural gas is the answer? think again! Supplies ran out in wealthy areas with generators. Diesel is the best bet but it's costly too. As for me, I will stick with wood and old tires. A car engine, a converted motor from a electric trolley, and Rick has full power for months if necessary!

The Honda is great, the 2,000 w is fine, you can run the basics, the best part of the Honda is some are very quiet (meant to be run in RV parksm so the have to be quiet), if you put it on one side of the house, you will not be able to hear it on the other side. What you will hear is your neighbors loud generator. The quiet Honda I think is a lot more than $600.

tallrick, I'd love to hear more about how you made your gasogen, and maybe see a couple pics. 55 gal drum? concrete or refractory cement? What did you do for filtering?

I was using the 55 gallon drum, with rim and salad bowl inside. It finally burned out, so I am going to build a permanent one. That will be cast in refractory cement. The old filter was a wet screen type, and I am not sure how I will build the new one. As soon as I can get my parents out of the grips of the terror cell, Team Metro I can get my generator rebuilt and I will post pics!
