march and april are nice as is october and november. By mid may-late september it is insanely hot outside. If you're heading to the beach may-sept its best to go after 5 or 6pm.

That might be true of south Florida--I don't know for sure.
But for north Florida, May/June, in my experience, are quite nice, very swimmable, yet not too hot.
July through August can be hot and humid away from the beach.
On the beach, it's quite bearable, and out on the water, very pleasant indeed.
October is beautiful for swimming all times of the day.
November, in north Florida, can be very dodgy, though: gorgeous one day, blustery the next.

While the water temperature might be OK, when I was speaking of May-Sept it was regarding the air temperature. I've lived in north Florida as well and its brutally hot up there by mid May. 15 minutes in the sun and you'll be scorched unless you're very dark-skinned.

Brutally hot? Scorched?

Average "High" temperature for May: 85 degrees (http://www.ameliatoday.com/averagetemperatures.htm - broken link)

It definitely gets very hot July through September.
But from my perspective, 85-88 is not brutal.
I would not want to live inland, but then, I don't.

By May and June it is well over 90 and very humid in SW Florida. I would not call this pleasant.
