We enjoyed our time there and found what appeared to be some pretty good deals in the area. A LOT of houses are for sale.

Sunrico, that link you gave ( Thank you ) also gives a lot of information about the development and they are apparently having some serious flooding problems. Someone mentioned it on the navarre beach forum to me in a pm as well. It's not clear whether or not it even can be fixed.

Stay tuned.

South of HWY 98 is a problem, got ot stay north of HWY 98. The beach area is great to visit but not to purchase because of the risk involved with hurricanes.

We live in the 399 road, our development is 8 years old and our area is not a flood zone, but if you drive towards the west end of 399 the back side of East Bay can create a problem during hurricanes. We have not experienced any problems at all....

The county is rated A+, see link: SRCSD Home

Navarre HS: --SRCSD standardized NHS page-- (broken link)

Awesome place, great community, low crime, great beaches, and plenty of housing at great prices. Do a search and you will lots of info.

Default commute

So the schools look good, area looks great (more house/property for your money compared to areas like Niceville & Fort Walton Beach). What about the commute to Fort Walton Beach from the no-flood-problem area of Navarre? What about during tourist time? How long of a drive are we looking at? Would it be better to live in Fort Walton? How do Navarre Schools compare to Fort Walton Schools? Comparing 2 different counties' schools seems difficult unless you have lived in the area and are familiar with it.

What about the commute to Fort Walton Beach from the no-flood-problem area of Navarre? During Ivan we had flooding in HWY 98, took about a day to get it clean up. Our normal drive to FWB is 25 minutes, during rush can be 45 to 60 minutes....

What about during tourist time? depends on the time of the day, maybe 30 minutes regular drive.

How long of a drive are we looking at? Would it be better to live in Fort Walton? If you want to be within the town, take FWB, great place. I like the rural and more secluded area of Navarre...

How do Navarre Schools compare to Fort Walton Schools? Both counties are A+....

Best approach is to visit the area and get a feel for it. Best of luck...

Navarre is a wonderful place. The problem with Navarre Northerners are very unwelcomed due to there liberal views. Santa Rosa County voted 78 % for George Bush and 74 % for John McCain. There were many reports of people that came down here from the north with Obama stickers and got there cars vandalized .Navarre is very southern. You will find confederate flags everywhere. Navarre is about 88% white and does not accept any one of another race. A great place were people from the north will fit in is Costal California. If you are a Conservative/republican/White/Christian from the north You will be welcomed to Navarre with open arms. Good luck

That's so sad. I had been considering it as one of the places that I would like to live, but have a biracial grand daughter. Are there any spots along the coast up that way where the folks are more tolerant and the schools are good?

No one I know who lives in Navarre grew up in Navarre. Like most of the US 98 corridor, they're transplants who either work in Pensacola and live there because Santa Rosa schools are better, or they work in Ft. Walton Beach and wanted a newer and bigger house without paying FWB prices.

Biracial families are actually pretty common here, usually white/Asian or black/Asian- lots of Air Force guys who have met their brides in Thailand or Korea or Vietnam or Japan and then ended up here as part of or after they finish their military service. As for racism against blacks, no place is perfect, but I haven't seen that kind of racism an early poster alleges in Navarre. (And it's definitely present in other places in the Panhandle; I'm not turning a blind eye to that problem in the larger area)

Politically, it is a very conservative place, but it's far more live and let let than many other parts of the bible belt.
