Whoa.. calling political names in a helpful thread? And most likely talking about curing cancer is going to be a collaborative effort from MANY different schools. The INDIVIDUAL matters more than the name of the school. That name on the door is only going to get you so far. CHARACTER, drive and determination counts for much much more, not whining about what's not fair in life...

It's absurd to compare UCF medical schools to the most elite in our nation...UCF is still in the infancy of their med program...but a highly motivated UCF medical school grad with an excellent resume will no doubt be very successful by most peoples standards...

Hey man, your post about how life ought to be is really nice and all, but it is really easy to look up and see that graduates from certain schools get more cash than graduates from other schools. I'm not certain why this concept is so difficult to understand, but I think it must be easier for people to sleep at night if they just pretend that everything is equal and everybody has the same advantages.

A typical graduate from the United States Naval Academy is going to get more cash on average than the typical graduate from Florida Atlantic University. You then can go on to say your nonsense about how character, drive, and determination count much more, but none of these key things you mentioned matter unless you're given opportunities, and graduating from a place like the United States Naval Academy is going to provide you with more opportunities than Florida Atlantic University will.

"The glorified community college" statement may depend on specialized programs the OP is looking for. For example - the nursing school at UNF is very well regarded and very hard to get into:

UNF - Brooks: School of Nursing - homepage

Ditto with the jazz program at UNF:

University of North Florida Department of Music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pharmacy is a hot area these days - and here are the pharmacy schools in Florida: The OP should obviously focus on these if he/she is interested in pharmacy.

I haven't kept up with UM in recent years (so I can't compare UM with UF - the obvious top 2 choices in general - head to head). But UF has certainly changed a ton since I moved to Florida in 1971. It's no longer simply a "party school" that students here can count on as a "lock" if they apply. The SAT scores are about the same as those my alma mater (Cornell) had when I was a student (in the 60's):

University of Florida Admissions: SAT Scores, Financial Aid & More

Average SAT scores are > 600 IIRC.

UF - like Cornell - is a land grant college:

University of Florida: Land Grant

As a result - it has specialized schools - like an ag school - as well as quite a few others (both undergraduate and graduate):

Colleges » University of Florida

Also - IIRC - UF is rated the 14th best public university in the US - and the 2nd best in terms of value.

Anyway - it would be really useful if the OP told us what he/she thinks he/she would like to study. And also something about his/her high school record. If we're dealing with < 500 SAT scores - we're almost certainly talking about schools other than UM or UF (unless the OP is destined for glory on the football field ). Also - is money a factor? And might the OP qualify for any types of scholarships at private or public schools? FWIW - one of my brothers got a total free ride at UM law school because he won something called a West Scholarship (a great non-need based scholarship from West Publishing Company).

More facts please OP. The more facts you give everyone here - the more info you'll get! Robyn

All medical schools are tough tickets. And which you think are the best may depend 100% on how you define the best doctors. It's like when I went to law school - the old saying was that the A students became the professors - the B students became the judges - and the C students made the money . FWIW - the best trial lawyer I ever knew in Florida went to Stetson. There are some things they can't teach you in school. Robyn

There is some sort of difficult accredited thing that UF has that is very difficult to get and only two of the SEC schools have and the other would be Vanderbilt. I wish I could remember what it is. Mizzou might be also.

The best school is the cheapest, most convenient, and affordable one you can get your education from. In todays knowledge based economy, gone are the days where you should go into huge debt with your education. As long as you attend a decent university, you will be fine.

All this Elitism will be debated for hundreds of years, because its technically impossible to prove BEST. Its based on human subjectivity and silly rankings.

Depends what you wanna go to school for.

Florida State has some very impressive engineering and scientific colleges.

Florida has the strongest overall ratings for public schools.

Honestly, as far as public schools go UF>FSU>USF>UCF. You'd be fine with any of those 4 though.
