I was born and lived in Michigan for 28 years before moving to Jacksonville (was married then and following a spouse). We lived there for a couple of years, then we moved to Tampa for 18 years, then to Tallahassee for a couple of years, then to Fort Lauderdale for a few years, then to Pensacola (I am now divorced, can you figure out why?). All told, I've lived in Florida for 29 years (one year longer than I ever lived in Michigan). My question is this, when I am asked "where are you from?", can I now say I'm from Florida? I'm thinking it might make things a little easier here in Pensacola.

I would tell people you're from Monaco - gives the illusion you have oodles of money ...

I usually say, "I'm from X but I have lived in Florida for 18 years."

In my mind I am a Floridian, but my kids are Native Floridians.

I'm an American. As such, I can move around as I like. That's as good as it gets.

I'd just say I was originally from MI but have been in FL longer now. Why lie about as you'll probably meet many from MI anyhow and the local idiots who spew crap that you're a transplant or "yankee', or feel they're superior because they're a "native" aren't the kind of friends you'd want anyhow.

I think the term "Floridian" actually means you currently live in Florida.

Doesn't the answer depend on what the person asking the question has in mind?? -- If they want to know where you were born or grew-up, you will never be able to respond, "Florida", regardless of how long you live there. If they are asking, "Where do you live now?" ... you might respond, "Ive lived in Florida for the past 29 years!" .... It's really not that complicated!

You have been a Floridian since you've been here for more than 5 years. IF by 5 years you have not adapted to the Florida life style, and exercise the expectations from wherever you are from, then your still considered to be from wherever your from.

In cases, Floridian simply refers to someone "FROM" Florida.
In other cases it means someone "LIVING" in Florida.

People I know don't consider themselves Floridians, since they have not accepted the lifestyle here, or adjusted to the customs and living situation here.

Personally I don't consider anybody who is not from Florida originally, a Floridian.

I also don't consider somebody who was born in Florida, but not raised in Florida a Floridian. They would be a wherever they are now.

Its not about where your from, but where your at, ultimately.

This could go either way.
