I'm a light sweater so, I have little doubt that a single application COULD last me 72 hours.., But.. It's also something that I really don't want to test.

Exactly, as long as it gets me through the day, I don't care if it lasts 100 hours.. I'm still showering daily and reapplying a fresh coat.
My gosh, it's 106 degrees out there today (well, that's the forecast), so I went with #1. Personally, I have no idea whether or not my deodorant/antiperspirant lasts 72 hours or not because I reapply it at least once a day, and I bathe at least once a day. I don't want to take any chances.
By the way, everyone tells me I smell really good so there's that.
I shower and wash my hair daily. I put on deodorant and my face creams and make up every day. I blow dry and style my hair every day, granted in a hurried way.
I think sweaty armpits and having moisture in that area is more likely to cause irritation than using deodorant every day.
Don't apply to unwashed armpits. Be sure to have showered first, then apply.
I still apply every day, I just ignore the '72 hour' type deodorants with ingredients that are harsher on your skin. Since I'm showering and washing my 'pits daily, the 72 hour is pointless to me anyway.
I hope most people wash-- at least the "important parts"-- more often than every three days. (Obviously might be a different matter if you're out in the bush, in combat away from civilization, in the hospital and relegated to bed baths, etc.)
And for anyone to whom deodorant is so dear that they only apply every few days-- please contact your local food banks, places of worship, etc. and see if any of them also provide personal-care supplies.

I guess you missed the part of the OP where I said that with daily application "occasionally there is some skin irritation." I am not a welfare recipient and I do not appreciate the bolded.
I never noticed before but my deodorant's label says "72 Hour Protection." I apply it daily but occasionally there is some skin irritation. Could it be true that you should not apply daily before work?
Skin irritation is probably due to aluminum salts. You should avoid buying those.
