I'm a semiretired teacher but I've been subbing lately. It seems that many high school students wear pajama pants to school. It looks strange but kids think its comfortable. I wonder who started the trend - it looks as if a person is about to go to sleep. Equally males and female students as well.

I think it's a lazy way to go through life and the kids probably see adults wearing pajamas and slippers when they go out to do their shopping. I think it's gross to go out wearing clothes you've slept in.

It might not actually be the same clothes that they slept in. During the pandemic, many people acquired a WFH wardrobe of comfortable clothes that's not the same as the items we'd actually wear to bed. People joke about their "daytime pajamas" and their "nighttime pajamas."
As for students, while on the one hand it's important to learn to dress properly for an occasion, many school dress codes are outdated and elitist. If a student comes to school in pajama pants and they do well and feel comfortable, how is that bad?
I am in my 60's. Way way back in the day, when I was...19 or 20, me and a friend went to visit another friend at her college. Our friend on campus went to class in her pajama bottoms and a tshirt. And she wasn't the only person dressed that casual.

^^I’m totally surprised this is still a thing. It was super popular when I was in middle school & high school….around 2003 & up. It was a big deal to wear them for exams & “short days” or on scavenger hunts.

Most teens take showers before going to school…I would think it is still that way. But nobody actually slept in them. It was about soft & comfortable….not about being dirty. Tho I know some of my friends had P.E. 1st period. It would make total sense if they waited to shower until after. I was lucky because cheerleading was my P.E. & it was last.
But for me & my friends, I don’t remember it happening a lot. BUT on short days it’s like I can remember a lot of us wearing them.

Drive by UVM and you'll see college students in their fleecy PJ pants and slippers wandering around to classes.
I don't get it and think it looks ridiculous, but I guess, yea, they are comfortable and warm.
You'd think colleges at least would have some type of dress code. Clearly, they don't. Because if you did, you're dictating what the little darlings can wear and that's just too much pressure on them to 'adult,' and a stifling of their creativity and God given right to look like slobs.
Rant over.

It's not a new trend.
I dunno. Wearing pajama bottoms and a T-shirt qualifies as 'dressed for bed' not 'dressed casual.' But let them do them. Then try dealing with them in the workplace.
