In my family's case, I don't exactly think it skips a generation. My mom has natural beauty and has never been into makeup. I grew up a tomboy with 2 older brothers and now I just really dont' like getting dressed up and I rarely wear any makeup. I just prefer the natural look. If convention dictates, I DO wear a dress (i.e. weddings, funerals, cruises) and some makeup, but I am just pretty uncomfortable.
I have 2 girls, one who's almost 4 and one who's almost 6. Both are adopted, so genetics aren't going to be in play here. My first child is about as tomboyish as a girl could get. She's gotten to the point where she really doesn't like to wear girl clothes at all, much less a dress. If she's misbehaving, I tell her I'm going to put her in a pink frilly dress. This straightens her right up

. I thought maybe she was tomboyish because she sees me rarely in anything dressy. Then along comes daughter number 2. This child is about as girly as a girl could get. She came in when I was putting on a bra a few weeks ago and said, "I need one too mommy!" She only wears dresses and would wear makeup and high heels daily if I let her. If SHE'S misbehaving, I tell her I'm going to put her in camo pants and a grey t-shirt. This works with her

Because both of my girls are adopted, I just have no clue if these things are genetic or not (two different bio moms.) If girliness comes from nurture (as opposed to nature,) my younger girl sure didn't get the girliness from me. I have no clue what to do with a girly girl!!!! My older daughter's tomboyishness is pretty extreme, but she is a confident, happy girl and that's how I want her to be.
