As long as you keep your feet clean and your heels smooth, wear what you find comfortable.
I saw a guy wearing sandals whose heels had big chunks of thick dried skin flaking off. I couldn't tell you what the sandals looked like because I was so grossed out by the heels of his feet. I am not easily freaked out by things, but his feet were disgusting.
Run a pumice stone over your heels when you are in the shower. It doesn't take much effort.
I have TEVA sandals that I adore but those open things in the picture prior to my post here are uglier than a Yellow Yugo.
Had a Big Toe accident when young and to this day it remains somewhat painful, cannot use those opened just in case and really for my taste they are not really nice looking or do not look comfy at all.

Same guy should run a pumice stone over his ear hair and through his nasal passages.
Birkenstock sandals with heel straps start at $100. I expect a lower price for an incomplete shoe. Birkenstocks without heel straps are overpriced shower sandals.

I don't think Birkenstocks are attractive on anyone. That said, it doesn't ruin my day to see someone wearing them, and people should wear them if they want to.
I hate seeing anybody's feet if they are neglected. Please, for the love of all things holy, don't wear sandals if your feet have ugly, yellow toenails, crusty heels, etc. I don't get grossed out by very many things but I do have an aversion to ugly feet.
My mother's best friend had all sorts of foot problems from years of wearing high heels. She had hammertoes and arthritis so her toes were all on top of each other. I know she probably wore sandals 99% of the time because they felt better but yuck. It's quite the conundrum - your feet hurt so you don't want to cram them into closed shoes so you wear sandals.
