The first time I saw that (or similar) kind of hair style on men was 55 years ago, back in the 60's when the Beatles made it popular. It was called the Beatle Cut or the Mushroom Cut. Mick Jagger also wore that style when he was younger, before he grew it really long.
That is likely where southern got that style and have kept it alive.
I didn't know it was a southern thing. That was almost every guy in my high school and college from around 2006-2012. I'm from Ohio.
It's a slightly southern thing. I see a lot more grown men wearing it in the South. And it doesn't look bad especially if they keep it up and are thinner.
I live in Dallas though and do not see this often other than on preppy teenagers.
I literally never see it (near Dallas myself). Haven't seen it since about 2010, and then it was on teens.
