I've always been a gym shoe guy with shorts but want to start wearing sandals. I haven't had a pair of sandals since I was a kid lol.
A (female) friend recommends getting a pair of leather flip flops like these:
They just seem too casual for most situations. Plus I am well into my 30s, aren't flip flops more for younger people? I haven't ruled them out but starting out, I am leaning toward something that covers more of the foot but doesn't look like something a retiree would wear. Here are some other options I am considering:
That's the only sandal suitable for going out, IMO. The first two look like things you'd wear around the house or at the beach/pool. The third looks too homemade and hippyish.
I think all of these are fine for something casual and outdoors like a barbecue, or if you're running errands on the weekend. I personally prefer either the top one or the sporty one because I don't care for the look of a leather covering of the top of the foot, but that's just me. I do think beach flip-flops are for college kids but leather ones are a bit nicer.
Many men don't take good care of their feet. I like the fisherman's sandal with a closed toe for a lot of guys.
Flip flops in public send a signal that the guy doesn't care. Nice leather ones are marginally better than pool types. I've seen slides worn all too often with socks, which, IMO, is a crummy look.
I don't mind Keens on guys, but that obviously is not a dressed up look.
I don't think a lady would really notice or care about what sandals a guy would be wearing.
