OP, I am not a guy but I want to recommend starting off with easier colors like almost white pale shades of green, all of the different shades of tan/ivory/cream and patterns. If you cannot see yourself wearing a burgundy shirt, maybe you can try a white shirt with a few burgundy stripes or pockets. I think that your wardrobe will be more interesting if there are patterns and color blocking.
I'm wondering what colors other guys wear. Is your wardrobe as equally limited?
Today, black golf shirt and khaki pants. On Friday it was bright red golf shirt and khaki shorts.
Thinking of what's in my closet, my golf shirt colors are: bright red, bright yellow, bright green, dark blue, dark green, white, and black. I have one that's got horizontal black, yellow, and gray stripes (Lacoste).
My "winter uniform" for work is mostly white button down oxford shirts, plus pink, blue, pastel yellow, etc. and a tie. Some Jerry Garcia, some Bill Blass, etc. Occasionally I'll don regalia celebrating the Mets (yes, I even have Mets neckties and logo dress shirts!)
Pants: Khaki, black, navy, brown, grayish-green, and I think khaki again.
BTW I'm 55 and married, with 2 kids in college if that makes a difference!

When it comes to button-up shirts for work, I wear mostly mild patterns. The only solids I own are light in colors such as green, blue and gray. For pants I wear khakis in several colors, dark blue, gray, and black. For casual home comfort I wear mostly pocket Ts, and have them in every color ( and many shades) but black, white and pink. Other than jeans, I have shorts in khaki, green, navy, and brown.
Shirts: No patterns, only solids. Different shades of pastel colors: black, blue, grey, white, tan, purple, pink, orange, green, red, etc. Pastels look the best on me, IMO (olive skin)
Pants: Black, different shades of grey, jeans. No tan colors.
Shorts: black, grey, dark/camo type of greens
I live in southern most New Jersey. A white tee-shirt is perfectly applicable during summer months.
