It seems like every man's wallet on Amazon and other websites, has plenty of bad reviews. People complain about bad quality on the stitching and the whole wallet falling apart after a few months. They even have the picture to prove it. These are wallets from well known popular brands too.
Money clips: Everybody can see how much money you have. You have to take all of the money out if you need a smaller bill that's on the inside. Do you want to shuffle through money for everyone to see?
I bought my husband a Perry Ellis premium leather sutton bifold wallet. I think it's good quality and looks nice. It's not too thick/bulky.
What do these people do to their wallets that they fall apart? I think I bought my last one at least 15 years ago. It's a bi-fold with an opposing fold out so it's actually a modified tri-fold.
The only complaint I've had is that the plastic card holder thingie fell apart after several years.
I don't remember where I got it, either Montgomery Ward or Hecht's (now Macy's).
A money clip is kind of a bad idea in a way for the reasons mentioned, although I rarely carry money in my wallet. What I do carry in it is credit cards and driver's license and a couple other ID cards. I do have to ask how those who don't carry a wallet do with their license/cards?
I go the money clip route for cash and a key ring/wallet combination for carrying credit cards. Years back in business when I wore suits I used a breast pocket wallet.
You often get what you pay for. I'd suggest a higher end brand, if he's going to keep the wallet for multiple years spending a bit more is often worth it.
I'd go to a few retail stores so you can see the wallet yourself, not just online reviews.
Tj. Maxx and Marshalls often have a good selection of men's wallet for a good price.
I bought hubby a wallet from errr QVC last year. Its full grain leather and is RFID protected. Brown leather on the outside and black inside and he likes it.
It has a quality feel and will hopefully last as long as his previous wallet.
Note: We have become aware of the need for RFID protection since a good friend had her wallet/purse scanned at an airport and had her bank account emptied by the time she got off the plane at her destination. Luckily she was travelling home so she sorted everything out with the bank but it still took 3 weeks to replace the funds in her account.
If you are buying leather, that is one item that needs to be seen, felt, and smelled in person. There is a lot of cheap leather out there that isn't all that nice.
Quality leather costs money even in an item as small as a wallet.
For the price of a designer name wallet, you could probably go to the local shoe repair guy and have him custom make you a wallet out of good leather and quality hand stitching.
