If you had some nice socks, like some Darn Toughs, they would look nice with sandals. Just plain white gym socks, no, they look ugly.

This. And some Tevas and Keens. I broke a pinky toe once and my old-style Tevas were all I could wear. I wore them with black socks and jeans and it took one of my bosses 3 weeks before he caught me at it.

Spring and fall. Leave the house early in the morning with some Darn Toughs or Smartwools to keep the toes warm, and pull them off as the day warms up. Easier than carrying around an extra set of shoes!
German and some European men think nothing of Speedos at the beach---now that is a look I will never be comfortable with. Give me socks and sandals any day.
I'm 68 years old, and have been wearing socks with closed-toe sandals since I was in my 30s. I started when I was living in the south. Here in the Chicago area, I wear them from April through October (I'm wearing them now). I wear socks whose color matches the sandals. I hate the feeling of my bare feet in any kind of shoe.
Frankly, I don't get the "Oh God, no" sort of comments. What do any of you care what anyone else is wearing? I certainly don't care what anyone else thinks (or what anyone else is wearing), and never have. Comfort's more important to me than fitting someone else's notion of what's "fashionable". As my grandma used to say, if you don't like it, mind your own beeswax.
I had to laugh - just finished reading all these comments, looked over at my husband, who is happily doing something on his laptop, wearing socks and sandals!
Did you look at the picture? They're all Black. It has nothing to do with fashion. Black people wear socks with sandals because their skin gets ashy.
And we all know there's no remedy for ashiness; not lotion, not baby oil...nothing.
So, yeah, that's why we Blacks wear socks with sandals.
