I think people should accept themselves, no matter their weight. It doesn't mean to stop striving for good health. But it also doesn't mean that you should loathe yourself if you're not where you want to be, either.
You have one life. If you spend time hating yourself, it's not a very good life.
I agree with this. I'm not a fan of the fat acceptance movement but at the same time I also think people need to love themselves regardless.
All I know is that when I get with the girls to lose weight in order to fit into a nice dress/outfit its really disheartening to hear "ohh youre fine the way you are; just buy a bigger size". Thats just it, i dont want to buy a bigger size. I want to lose weight so i can fit into the smaller sizes.
It's not okay to make people feel bad about themselves. That doesn't cause change to happen. Everyone should love themselves enough to want to be healthy, though, and when you're obese you're putting massive strain on your heart as well as other vital organs and even your joints. That's not loving yourself. It's pretty much the opposite.
I don't know about all you, but lately I been reading a lot of stuff on the Internet about the fat acceptance movement. I am not sure what their message is exactly but from what I gather they are trying to fix the societal standard of beauty to include larger people(mainly women) and normalize overweight people. I know what's it's like to be overweight and have a low self esteem so I don't think it's a bad thing to raise the self esteem of overweight individuals. There was also the Tess Holliday model making the rounds on the Internet.
The population of the USA is 60% overweight.
Since THAT represents the MAJORITY of the populous, the "skinny 110 lbs model" is NOT the "average" USA citizen.
I used to be a skinny-mini male {125lbs, 5'6" 28" waist} and then I had 4 major surgeries in 3 years,{at age 36} started certain medications {side effect: weight gain}, and slowed down from 2 jobs to one, I started to gain. Slowly at first, but still gaining.
When I got to 200 lbs, I tried very hard to take it off, but i still kept growing.
Th crux: i still gain weight even only eating 2 small meals {breakfast, dinner} and a salad for lunch {lettus, carrot shreds, radish slices, spinach leaves} I can only shed 25 lbs then start to gain again.
I can't execersize very well as I get around with a cane {back back, Rt hip labral tear, severely arthritic knee, but DO walk a measured 1.3 miles {or more} a day.
I used to THINK "fat people need to stop eating" but NOW I "are one", and I KNOW that is not ALWAYS the issue.
I need to shed about 75lbs, but can only master 25lbs until I start gaining again.
So, "NORMALIZING" fat people, with 60% ^"overweight" , we need to accept the reality that MOST people in this country {and other developed countries} are "fat",and we SHOULD accept them, rather than try to ChANGE THEM, We NEED to change our attitudes.
Not every male can be an "Adonis",and not every female can be an "Aphrodite", so LETS be accepting of what WE ARE.
I am NOT saying the "unhealthy fat people" {those who put away 3 quarter pounder meals all at once, with 2 sundaes and an apple pie to boot} should be accepted without a wayward glance, but reality is reality.
You can do what you want. I don't care, that thread was meant to be an encouragement. No need to get angry.
Bullsh*t.
You posted about this a year ago, and in post#3 of the thread I linked, you were NOT very encouraging about fat acceptance. You were "relieved" to find people agreed with you that fat people have "no pride in their appearance."

I SO understand where you're coming from! I was "normal" weight and then fell down a flight of stairs, pulverizing my ankle (while carrying my newborn baby, to make it worse!) I couldn't walk for a full year and gained 70 pounds from post partum depression and being immobile.
I had weight loss surgery that was botched big time and lived in chronic pain and was unable to eat anything but liquids. I got skinny, for sure. Because I was starved and malnourished. Had the weight loss surgery reversed, kept the weight off through diet and exercise (to the point of being obsessive. No fun.)
Quit smoking, had a hysterectomy, had some complications which required long term usage of prednisone. Gained 60 pounds back! I don't overeat. I exercise as much as I can. My metabolism is so screwed up from having starved for two full years that it's just an uphill battle.
Boy, do I understand what you're saying. It's not as simple as just diet and exercise. There are so many other factors that come into play. Best of luck to you. Thanks for sharing your story.
I'm definitely not skinny. But I am mature enough and feel lucky to be alive at this point, so I have to accept myself the way I am. I still do my best to get to my optimal weight, but I don't hate myself while doing it.
