It's not an inner city thing. When looked into this online, it seems to span across geographical and class lines.
Long fingernails originated in China as a sign of wealth and not needing to work. So I'm guessing there's a similar reason for the toenails.
The long toenail style seems to have started in India. It may be that it's an indicator of wealth and privilege. Obviously the only people who can wear this style--especially the extreme lengths--has to be someone who has little to do and can wear sandals all the time. This style is incompatible with toiling in the fields or working in a factory/office/professional setting.
I'm not sure why it's becoming popular here.
Anyone who has more info on this, please chime in.
No one is talking about the origins of the long toenails. Heck, when people talk about jeans here on CD, you hear no meantion of "Well, when one searches back into antiquity, the ancient Romans longed for the denim look as a sign of......blah blah blah....".
It looks like an inner city/urban thing and that is my take on it.
Havent seen long toenails here while hanging out at Malibu beach, or at the synagogue sponsored picnics. Nope. But looking at the pics posted in the original post, it gives one clues to formulate just who would wear such unappealing long toenails.
I can't wait until they catch their nail on something and flip it up completely ripping it off. I've done this on much shorter nails and I literally was rolling around on the ground screaming in pain
Oh, not to mention "clicking" across the floor when you walk barefoot. Ew.
LOL. Scuffing up my new hardwood floors with her toenails. Eeeeeewwwwwww!!!!!!
