Is this a common thing? I shave other areas of my body, but never thought it was normal to get rid of arm hair. Is it considered "uncouth" for women to have hair on their arms? Not that there's anything wrong with not shaving anything, I'm just wondering how common this is, or if it's a new thing?
I know this isn't answering your question directly, and this is coming from a guy - but I wouldn't do anything more than necessary. Why make things that much more difficult for yourself?

I don't know if it's true, but we've all always heard that if you shave something that the hair will grow back darker and thicker or whatever. If you don't unneededly shave your arms, you won't have that problem.

Nope, not a necessity.

However, it if makes you feel better, go for it.

I honestly never thought about it before this thread, but I've got almost translucent arm hair so it's never been an issue for me.

That's a myth. When shaving, you're cutting the hair off at an angle, so when it grows back the hair follicle appears to be coming in thicker and darker. The width and color of the hair shaft actually does not change.

Very popular myth, though.

Op "we" don't have to do anything. If you believe otherwise well...that's all on you. Have fun getting hot wax ripped off your arms.

I would never. Imagine if you went without a day or two and then someone brushed up on you and it feeling prickly? :S Has happened to me with some friends before and it the feeling is quite gross.

I'm fairly hair and mid 50s I find that now I do sometimes take a hair trimmer, not a razor!, and sort of shorten up significantly. That works for me.

Why would you want arm hair stubble? If it is dark I have known women to bleach their arm hair.
