I enjoy dressing up and look forward to my nights out with my husband which gives me the opportunity to throw on dressier outfits, accessories and sky high heels. I was just commenting to my husband how disappointing it is to see that no one really makes an effort to get dressed up anymore. I find the men to be much more casual than the women at the upscale lounges/restaurants.
Having 3 little ones makes it difficult on a daily basis, but I do try and get dolled up for functions. Although these days I find I have to tone it down because the moms tend to be super casual and can be somewhat standoffish with me.
Question for the ladies: How do you avoid being too casual in the winter? The cold is not my friend, so I tend to put on as many layers as possible which turns me into a bulky, staticky mess. I have a couple skirts good for cool weather, but haven't yet met a pair of stockings that actually kept me warm.
Is there a solution, or do I just have to stay indoors once the weather turns?

Do you get the opaque or sweater type stockings?
I am useless though, winter for me is really mild!

You're screwed..stay indoors!
I tend to wear boots that have some type of heel, at least 2". For some reason, people around these parts view that as "dressed up."
I'll wear cashmere or cashmere blend sweaters with a light weight tee underneath and that seems to work for me. My favorite coats are my belted wool coats. They're classic pieces with one being camel and the other black. They make all the difference in keeping me warm and making me look much dressier...even if I'm just wearing skinny jeans and a basic tee. And I always have basic black leather cashmere lined gloves. Oohh and how could I forget my trusty cashmere and/or wool scarves that can also be utilized as a wrap when I get chilly indoors!?!?! (I keep stocking up on various solid colors from Nordies.)
I aim for sweater type, and have quite enjoyed these American Apparel thigh highs since I don't have to worry about ending up with the crotch falling down between my thighs the way normal tights do, but even these I tend to wear under jeans and still come out numb.
And my winters aren't exactly harsh, but I'm a skinny gal who feels most comfortable on an 85 degree day so 40 degrees is pretty rough for me.
I love dressing up too. The definition of dressing up for me though is not wearing frilly dresses. But I love to accessorize my clothes. It could a simple white top and dark blue jeans, but then I will spice it up with a red purse, some chadelier earings and a basic foundation. I can't bear to step out as if I don't care. And I love my heels.

That's part of what I'm talking about... your description is perfect for a Saturday lunch, running errands, movies, etc. but I doubt you'd wear that to a formal wedding, correct?
I'm not one for dresses either, mostly because they hit in the wrong place at the waist and hemline because of my height. I stick mostly to pencil skirts, suits and dress pants for work. I do wear dresses for formal occasions but they tend not to be fussy.
I wear casual dresses frequently. Knits or cotton or blends in simple shapes like a sheath or fit and flare or something else. Saves a lot of mental energy!
