I am short, about 5'3. I have a hard time finding petite sizes at the regular department and mall stores. Right now, the only place I buy my trousers and pants is The Loft since they fit me perfectly. I also shop at Express but when I buy the jeans they are way too long.

Can someone recommend a good clothing store that sells nice petite clothes?

When you're short (and even when you're not) you're rarely going to be able to find pants that fit right off the rack. Find ones that fit you everywhere else, and get them shortened at a tailor.

That's what I've done in the past but for cases when I need the pants the next day or whatever, that's not the best solution.

How often do you find yourself in such pants emergencies?

Hemming pants is extremely easy. I would recommend buying a sewing machine and hemming them yourself. At least you're not super tall... It's much easier to hem Pants then add fabric to them

That's not a solution to me. The pants will never have the shape they were meant to have. As hard and frustrating as it is (I'm petite, too), pants fitting right can be found.

I am 5'4" and the short length is almost always a hair too short, while the regular length is always too long. I have to have every pair of pants I buy hemmed.

Nordstrom will hem pants purchased there for free.

Buy higher heels, LOL. Seriously, I'm almost 5', I hem my pants myself, by hand. Off the rack, short is too short, even for my height, I'm more short-waisted. Some brands that are a good length for me are: Nine West Petite, INC petite regular, Spring Street (Jrs.), many brands in girl's (if you're small enough) if I can find in a style I'd wear (no sequins, glitter, embroidery, etc.).

I won't call them emergencies but I've experienced at least 5 since September. There are stores out there because The Loft has the exact length I need. I was looking for alternatives.

Well, if you look hard enough, you can find them (not easily, of course) in many stores and individual boutiques. Out of the better known names, I'd say Saks Off Fifth, Chico's, Talbots are some places to try.
