Having tattoos is just a superficial facet of a person's personality. No different than having a Fendi bag, bleach blond hair, bright red lipstick or an throwback 80's punk t-shirt. As a species we like to adorn ourselves with things we think represent us as an individual. Clothing, hair, tattoos, cars, its all basically the same.

Most people get tattoos simply for the fact that they like them.
Exactly... I guess that's why I get annoyed by this question, because honestly there's no answer that will be sufficient enough - whether they're for cultural reasons, aesthetic appeal, memories, love of pain, or simply "I like how they look," why does it even matter? Is there a good reason why my nails are currently painted dark red, or why I have earrings in my ears? Not really! Humans have been adorning their bodies for thousands of years, and often it's for no good reason other than personal taste.
But it certainly doesn't say anything about our character, education, professionalism, classiness, or any of that BS. I think people would be surprised to find out the variety of who's tattooed (since you can't always see them), from your teachers & doctors to the old lady down the street. I just started a new library job, and even I was surprised to discover it's a fairly inked-up staff... including a woman/librarian who is 50-60 years old, with a full Asian back-piece & wrist band. Sweet.
