I'm asking because I used to run/jog(run for a few seconds then jog and repeat until I felt like crap) at night when I was 18-19, and I started getting smaller and smaller.

The most important part of it is going at 100% all-out running as if you are running an Olympic 100 yard dash AND being chased by some pit bulls. Sometimes, when people run, they are not going full out. They are at about 75%-85% instead of the full 100% that is part of doing HIIT properly. Because of this (and from all of the studies performed) HIIT is considered to be much more effective in burning fat.
Good question though.
