My Mother-in-law says her grandfather was born in Barton Barton , Germany. I have done searches on the web for this town and come up with nothing. Does this ring a bell with anyone, or does she just have the wrong name? Am I spelling it wrong? She only knows it by memory and there is no one alive anymore to ask if she is correct. (Although she insists she is correct)

You are right, a web search turns up nothing for this town name, nor does a google map search. I lived in Germany for many years in the 1970s, there is one place in Germany I know of that sounds like it - "Baden Baden". My guess is that your MIL got a few letters mixed up or possibly misunderstood the pronunciation? Baden Baden is a famous old resort spa town in the in the state of Baden Wurttemberg. It's about 100 km east of Stuttgart and about 30 km south of Karlsruhe. Just try a google map search on Baden Baden and you will see where it is.
The other possibility is that Barton, or Barton Barton is a place that no longer exists. To me, Barton just does not sound like a German town name, it sounds English. Many towns in East Prussia and Silesia that were part of Germany became part of Poland after WWII. The names of those towns were changed to Polish names and many of the inhabitants left and went to Germany (hundreds of thousands or perhaps millions).

I'm German and have never heard of a town called Barton-Barton. It would have to be Baden Baden.

Baden Baden for sure (my family was from there too - on my dad's side). Ask your mother-in-law she ever heard any reference to Casino's. Baden Baden was a known for it's upper-crust casino. My great-grandfather gambled with Czar Nicholas there.

Thanks so much for all the responses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You guys are great!
My daughter, who will be the first in our family to travel out of the country, will be going to Germany and a few other places on a HS trip next summer. My mother-in-law was hoping to get some photos from the town or a post card. I can now see if she will be close to that town on her trip.
Thanks again!

Baden-Baden I think . My Father was based there when he was in the armed forces. Lovely town and huge army base nearby.

Stadt Baden-Baden

Yep, that would have to be Baden-Baden. Very nice town, not far from Heidelberg, where I live. Also just an hour or so to Switzerland (Basel) and even closer to France (Elsace region). The black forest is just around the corner , too.

Well worth a visit. Baden-Baden is famous for its casino (as mentioned before) which is very upscale, very different to the ones you find in Vegas for example.

The town is also famous for its Spa's.

It is not a hip town, it doesn't attract a young crowd. There isn't much in terms of nightlife but it is a very pretty town with some very nice hotels and other historic buildings.

If you need help planning a trip, let me know.
