The red Khmer killed people only because they weared glasses, so both were utterly evil but it's difficult to tell which ideology is more terrifying. It is like the Terminator vs. Michael Myers.
Communism is not a horrible ideology. This is the beautiful ideology, which had many followers around the world. We must not confuse "ideology", "cruel rulers" and propaganda of the Cold War.

Exactly. Communism didn't fail, humanity did. The only known examples of successful communism are from the insects. Ants and bees are exceptionally successful communists.
Well I hope we all know by now that Russians never claimed to have achieved "Communism" in their country. Whatever they've had, has been officially christened as "developed Socialism."
The only reason Russia has been dubbed as a "communist country" was because people who stood at the beginnings of the new system referred to themselves as "communists."

Of course it DID work for them. If not for "communism" and rapid industrialization they would have lost during the WWII and ceased existing as a nation all together most likely.
It's as I've said with time they refused to budge and go for due changes and adjustments of their system, when their country was already functioning in "non-emergency" mode. And that's what made their society fail at the end.

I'm not so sure about that, by the 1980's though there were food shortages in Russia and people queueing for bread.

Indeed they were queuing ( and mostly not for bread, but other necessities,) because of the stubborn refusal of the authorities to allow private sector to develop, to reconsider their possibilities in agriculture/food processing industry and so on.

The 20th century was a 'difficult' one for the Russian people.

Yes it was. ( But then, again, the life was difficult for them in previous centuries too. Life is never easy for the Russians.)
