The hermitage is situated on a top of of a prominence on Dâmbovița Valley, in the foothills of Leaota Mountains.
In Antiquity at the base of the prominence was a large Dacian settlement that had on the top of the height a fortification. It was the most important Dacian settlement from northern Muntenia.
The cave church of the hermitage was created in 13th century by a Transylvanian delegation sent by the Hungarian king to found the state of Wallachia, initially subordinated to Hungary (similar to Moldavia, founded by Romanian Maramure; voivods sent by Hungary). The mission was composed of Orthodox Romanian voivods from Land of Făgăraș and of Catholic Saxons. A small urban settlement was created over the vestiges of the Dacian site and the cave church on the height with two altars, one Orthodox and one Catholic, because the Hungarian king hoped the locals will convert to Catholicism. The wooden church of the hermitage is contemporary.
